From the third of December the sun stays under the fell. The day is a three-hour dusk that never gets past pink, so every frame is a long breath held on the tripod.

I spent nineteen days in Lapland in December 2025, between Pallas and the villages along the Muonio river, in a rented cabin with a wood stove and one window facing south. Every morning I walked out before eleven and waited for the colour. Noon is the brightest it gets: a band of pink on the southern horizon, blue everywhere else, and snow that gives back more light than the sky.

I shot it all on Portra 800, pushed a stop, on a Mamiya 7, and on a Nikon F3 for the reindeer, who would not wait. Exposures ran from a quarter of a second to eight. The cold killed one battery a day and froze the advance lever twice. Nothing here is lit by me: the lamps belong to the villages, the windows to the people behind them, and the pink to a sun that never came up.
